"DAVISOURCE" MICROPHONES

*** PLEASE NOTE *** - As of spring, 2023, we regrettably announce that the classic DS-1950 hand made microphone will no longer be offered and is now listed as ''NLA'' (no longer available). The descriptive section for this microphone is still included below for archival reference.

THE DS-1950

BEFORE ...
You had your typical microphone ...

NOW ... You have the DS-1950!

There is NO OTHER microphone like our custom designed, DS 1950!

Whatsmore, there is probably no single thing you can do for your studio ...
to enhance aesthetic "warmth"
(as well as "WARMTH" OF SOUND!)
that will be more effective than hanging one (or more)
of our DS-1950 handmade microphones from your boom(s)!

For well over a year, we withdrew the original DaviSound 1950 from distribution ...
in an attempt to further refine an already superb performer.

We wanted to simultaneously refine and improve
both the "aural and visual" effects of the microphone if we could.

By the spring of 2004, we had finally ...
after much re-prototyping and testing ...
accomplished both!

Here are some of the many good things Joel Hamilton had to say
after testing his new DS-1950 -

"The mic seems to respond to the key that the source is in much more
than any microphone without a resonant cavity that the capsule "lives" in.

I love it.

In the current state of lame cheapo ...
overly bright, no character microphones taking over the prosumer market,
I am so glad to own a DaviSound 1950.

This microphone has character to spare, and is super nice to look at.
The sound is unique, and interesting, with a quality all its own ...
just like the wood it is made from.

Another cool piece, Hayne." -

So it is with much pride that we now offer you the DS-1950 Second Edition ...
slimmer in styling and 3 dB "hotter" in performance
(for improved self noise specs) ...

ALL NEW ...
DS - 1950

The Magic's In The Grain ....

Like a fine handmade, wooden stringed instrument, the DS-1950 works its magic
(both aural and visual)
through the character of fine, natural, solid wood!

The microphone case is hand-crafted entirely of solid 1/4" natural wood stock
with hand worked, hand rubbed oil finish.

Each resulting microphone has its own inherent, uniquely distinct ...
individual wooden character!

The wood is typically American Red Oak but, as of late 2004 ...
we began offering imported exotic woods as well.

Here is a beautiful Padauk "Exotic" model ...

The body is actually a miniature audio cabinet ...
carefully balanced and fashioned in a style...
that is reminiscent of the 50's era ...
the classic "diamond" shape!

More photos of this first Padauk mic linked below!

Yes ... there IS MAGIC in the grain and ...

There is ALSO MAGIC in the SHAPE!

If you note carefully, the DS-1950 body is actually a classic SEVEN SIDED
miniature audio "room"!

There are NO parallel interior surfaces and the interior cavity is acoustically "tuned" to focus the incoming soundwaves exactly where they should be.

Some Quotes from pre-viewers ...

"Even It's styling is very ... musical!
It reminds me of a classy, '50s JukeBox!"

"Your shape and styling are superb ...
It does possess the perfect visual and aural 'balance'!"

The precision elements, which are individually tested and selected for all our condenser mics, utilize "gold vapored" low-mass diaphragm techniques for maximum transient response and ultimate fidelity! This means ultra low distortion characteristics and superb frequency response consistent under all conditions and over time!

Our special, made-to-order, smaller capsules with ultra miniature diaphragms, being inherently of much lower mass, and surface area, react to soundwave impulses more naturally than the bulkier, mechanically heavier, large "drum" diaphragms!

The resulting audio truly speaks (or sings and plays) for itself with easily recognizable, unarguably superior, performance and fidelity true to the original source!

The following is a recent user comment
that we were planning to add to our FAQs page ...
But, since it addresses BOTH our DaviSnake and our DS-1950 ...
we decided to include it here ...

    Question from client -

I'm really suprised how nice that guitar sounds with these mics (DaviSnake) and pre-amps (TB-12). No other mic I've tried comes even close and I have tried some pretty expensive mics including some N - - - - - - KM- - -'s, which are "billed" as acoustic guitar mics.

This may sound funny, but I could swear, these mics even make the room I was using them in Sunday sound halfway decent, too. Maybe they down played it a bit, or simply dodn't exagerate it as my other mics would seem to do.

Anyway, so far, I think the DaviSnakes are fantastic mics aaaaand I have some questions for you.

First, what kind of difference could I expect between the DaviSnake and the 1950 mic? I remember reading that the elements are the same, so i'm curious.

    Answer -

As for the sound of the DS-1950 ... it does have a "character" created by the resonant cabinet mount.

The "snakes" feature the ideal mount for the "non-colorized" performance of the element itself which is, in my experience, about the most "natural" microphone performance I have ever heard, period. It really is crystal clear, life-like sound that is captured by the ultra-miniature, precision diaphragm.

But, while the 1950 uses the same element, it is recessed within the "tuned" wooden cabinet whereby the directed reflections of the cabinet, and its reaction to, as well as focus and concentration of , the sound pressure levels plays a part. Basically, the sound seems to "thicken" somewhat and does not appear quite as "bright" as the element mounted outfront on the "snake".

While I usually refrain from using adjectives in an attempt to describe sound, let's attempt it here and just call it a somewhat "fatter" sound than the DaviSnake due to the DS-1950's cabinet resonance in the lower mid - upper lower frequency range. This is NOT a traditional proximity effect of a uni directional mic's low end boost at close range but, rather, a much broader, source dependent, sloped "pressure focus" reaction at the lower end of the frequency spectrum that causes the, somewhat, "fatter" lower end.

If you decide to get a pair of 1950's ... keep in mind that these items take a LONG time to produce and we are getting ready to put an announcement to that effect on the site so that anyone ordering these will expect a couple of months, or more, for delivery.

While we are constantly looking at ways to possibly speed the assembly process of these without sacrificing the quality and resulting performance, so far we haven't found ANY shortcuts!

And ... more excerpted from a recent "News Updates" Page ...

Our DS-1950 microphones have seen an unprecedented demand recently and right now, as of this writing, we have FIVE of these, MOST unique, microphones on order and in various stages of construction. Three of them are being fabricated from exotic woods and we look forward to displaying these beauties on our website upon completion!

Please understand that we will NOT be able to turn out too many of these pieces per year. No matter how efficient we may continue to become with our fabrication techniques throughout the future, the DS-1950 microphone will always inherently require an extraordinary amount of completion time, compared to some of our other products.

This is because there are so many individual steps required in constructing these handmade instruments, mostly in the mini cabinet glue-up fabrication process, each stage requiring fixed set-up and cure times before moving to the next.

Each mic is hand carved and assembled and each cavity is individually "tuned" and tested in various stages for various characteristics.

There can be NO doubt that the DS-1950, all wooden body, microphone is, by far, the most unique microphone ever conceived! I am very pleased to have been the innovator of this esoteric design and, of course, more pleased because of the excitement it is starting to generate all over the globe in recent months!

I just remind all of you who would like to own one, or more, of these rare gems, that we will be working on them for you as swiftly as possible but this is one piece that will likely require several months to bring to fruition from the time
    you place your order.

So, please get your orders in well ahead of anticipated use, and then relax while we work dilligently over the months, through all the required steps and stages, to create a unique collector's item for you whose performance you will enjoy for a lifetime!

    AND NOW ...

    We Present the heralded ...

    "DAVISNAKE" / "DAVISWINGER"Microphone

IF YOU DO NOT SEE A PHOTO OF A UNIQUE HAND-MADE DAVISOUND MICROPHONE ... AND A SMALL BOX WITH AN ' X ' APPEARS INSTEAD ... THEN PLEASE 'RIGHT-CLICK' ON THE ' X ' AND SELECT 'SHOW PICTURE' ... THE PHOTO SHOULD THEN DOWNLOAD. THANK YOU!

This is another UNIQUE handmade microphone offering from Davisound ...
Yet, it is entirely apart from the DS-1950.
The only thing that they share in common is ...
their utilization of the same, select, precision, ultra-miniature element.

That's right ... we call it The "DaviSnake" ...
(the name inspired by a client who wanted to order our "snaky looking" microphone!)!

We have installed the same superb, miniature electret condenser element
    along with DaviSound support circuitry
directly inside a standard XLR connector...
Which is plugged into a 12" Gooseneck flexible mount...
and the audible result is actually "startling" !

And, the low cost is kind of "startling" also
for the full fidelity, professional quality this phantom powered mic acheives!

THANK YOU!

The old direct goosneck mount design was replaced in 2021 by a detachable XLR head containing the element and support ciruitry. This allows for using the same mic as the traditional "DaviSnake" mount (attached to a stand/boom with a mic clip)...OR...it can become the "DaviSwinger" by simply unplugging the head from the gooseneck!

    SO...

    The Omni Directional ...
    "DaviSwinger"
Condenser Mic and the "DaviSnake" are now one in the same...
Or, maybe we should say, TWO in the same!
The "DaviSwinger" is the PERFECT Hanging (Swinging) MIC ...
for flying overhead on "tree" mounts or otherwise!

Now, the DaviSnake is easily converted to the "DaviSwinger"...
by simply unplugging the head connector!
The mic head (XLR Connector) can now be
    "DaviSwung" from the mic cable
    from any "DaviSwinging" location!

This photo courtesy of Weston Ray, Weston House Recording.
Weston swears by the transparency of his original DaviSnakes...
Shown here set up as overheads for drums.

We think this quiet, ultra-low distortion ...
wideband flat response, high output microphone ...
out-performs ANY other electret mic we've compared it to ...
and even produces results better than big condenser microphones ...
    costing MANY hundreds of dollars!

You can read a full user test description and "review" about this mic on our
    DaviStories User Comments area.

We are finding that it is now continually getting "rave reviews"
for application in recording acoustic guitar and other acoustic instruments
outperforming many expensive traditional, standard mics in this regard!

DaviSnake Microphone Description and Electrical Specifications -

This unit features the same identical, unique, minature, precision, imported, custom-made element used in our DS-1950. Except in this case, the unit is used in traditional fashion instead of the cabinet mount
"pressure focus" technique used with the DS-1950.

  • Frequency response - FLAT within 1 dB from 18HZ to 22KHz
  • Sensitivity -     - 40dB (0 dB = 1V/Pa)
  • Max Input Sound Level (SPL) 128 dB @ 1kHz, (< 1% THD)
  • S / N Ratio 68 dB +/- 2dB UNWEIGHTED
  • Active device - High Performance Prescision FET
  • Power Requirements - Standard Phantom +24 VDC to +48VDC
  • Current consumption- Approximately 4ma
  • Output - Low Impedance TransformerLESS approximately < 500 ohms (matches any pro mic input)
  • As of 2021, support circuitry is housed within the XLR connector making the connector itself
the complete housing for the microphone

NOTE! - A side benefit of our acoustic isolation mounting technique with this unique gooseneck attachment method is the resulting ultra-low handling noise! In fact, it is typically SO immune to handling noise that it is safe to say ...
    NO handling noise!

  • The unique housing, it's near "nil" handling noise, and it's superb quality ...
make it ideal for high quality broadcast applications
in direct desk mount and podium flange mount situations.
(You can bend the gooseneck around with the mic live and typically hear, amazingly, NOTHING! )

It is equally at home mounted on any type of mic stand for most any application
wherever a high quality condenser mic is desired.
